Q. What is LL 8?
A. LawLab 8.0 is the latest version of our case management software, released in 2024. It includes advanced security features, comprehensive party and case management tools, automated appointment bookings, advanced permissions controls, and more.
Q. Why is the upgrade necessary?
A. LawLab 6.0 was released in 2019. Its underlying technology has reached the end of its supported life cycle, so we are retiring that version and moving subscribers to LawLab 8.0.
Q. How much will LawLab 8.0 cost?
A. The standard subscription rate is $39 per user per month, effective October 1, 2026.
As a nonprofit, we completely understand the importance of keeping costs manageable. We have added features over time without raising prices, but LawLab 8.0 requires more computing resources and costs more to maintain and support.
Q. How does the upgrade impact my subscription price?
A. Subscribers migrating from LawLab 6.0 to LawLab 8.0 are eligible for a 50% discount based on the number of active users on their account as of October 1, 2026, up to a maximum of 10 users. The discounted rate is $19.50 per eligible user per month.
Any users beyond your eligible discounted count will be billed at the standard rate of $39 per user per month, following a 30-day grace period beginning on your migration date. During that period, those additional users will not be charged, and you may reduce your user count before charges for them begin.
For example:
- If you had 7 active users on October 1, 2026, you qualify for the discounted rate for 7 users, totaling $136.50 per month. Any users beyond those 7 will be billed at $39 per user per month after the grace period.
- If you had 12 active users on October 1, 2026, you qualify for the discounted rate for 10 users. The remaining 2 users will not be charged during the grace period. If you retain all 12 users, your monthly total after the grace period will be $273 ($19.50x10 + $39x2).
The discount will remain in effect until December 31st, 2027. You may request a discount renewal at helpdesk@innovationlawlab.org beginning December 1st, 2027.
Q. How does migration work, and will the system be unavailable?
A. Migration is largely automatic. Most migrations take about one hour; larger databases may take several hours. Your LawLab instance will be unavailable while migration is underway.
We recommend scheduling migration over a weekend or at another time when your team does not normally use the system. You can review the migration steps here: https://innovationlawlab.org/news-and-analysis/ll-80-migration-instruct…
Q. What happens if I do not migrate?
A. If you do not complete the migration by December 31, 2026, your LawLab instance will be taken offline and your subscription will end.
You will be able to retrieve your data until December 31, 2026. After that date, your data will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. We strongly encourage you to export your data before your subscription ends so you have time to confirm that you have everything you need. Refunds may be issued based on your subscription end date.
Q. Can I export my data and go to another case management system?
A. Yes. Your data belongs to you, and you may choose to end your subscription instead of migrating to LawLab 8.0. You are responsible for preserving your data and arranging its transfer to another system.
An administrator can download a MySQL database export by signing in to your current LawLab instance and navigating to: {instance-url}/admin/db-backup}
Replace {instance-url} with your organization’s LawLab web address
The database export is generally updated daily around 2 a.m. Pacific Time. It includes your database records but does not include uploaded files or attachments. Because it is a database export, you may need technical assistance to import it into another system.
LawLab can assist with exporting attachments at $250 per hour. Attachment exports take at least one hour and may take several hours for larger databases. We can provide an estimate based on your database size and number of attachments. To request an estimate or arrange an attachment export, contact us at helpdesk@innovationlawlab.org by December 1st, 2026
Q. Does LL 8 support immigration forms?
A. Almost! Native immigration-form production is still in development. We plan to begin beta testing in the second half of 2027. In the meantime, LawLab 8.0 supports an integration with Docketwise (a separate Docketwise subscription is required).
Q. What does my subscription fee support?
A. Innovation Law Lab is a nonprofit. Your subscription fee covers the cost of operating your LawLab instance and supports our work, including litigation, direct representation, toolkits, and publicly available resources.
