Today, the Laken Riley Act was signed into law. 

The Laken Riley Act will:

• Require the detention of people based on nonviolent accusations such as shoplifting, tearing families apart and feeding a for-profit detention industry.
• Empower states to sue the federal government for “failure” to enforce immigration laws, further legitimizing anti-immigrant, white supremacist policies.

This law is NOT about public safety,  it’s about scapegoating immigrants, perpetuating fear, and fueling a system of mass incarceration.

The signing of this law is a heartbreaking blow to immigrant communities across the country. Laws like this are meant to harm, sow fear, isolate families, and chip away at the dignity of people who deserve to feel safe and valued.

But we are stronger than this. Immigrants are at the heart of our communities, and we are committed to standing together against policies like this one.

At Innovation Law Lab, we refuse to let laws like the Laken Riley Act define who we are. We will keep fighting, with everything we have, to protect immigrant families, to challenge injustice, and to build a future where no one has to live in fear because of where they were born.

To those affected by this law: We see you. We stand with you. And we will keep showing up for you, day after day. Together, we are powerful, and together, we will overcome this.
