Last week, on October 10th, anti-immigrant forces once again stood before the 5th Circuit in an attempt to dismantle Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and tear apart immigrant families. This attack wasn’t just aimed at the 600,000 people currently protected by DACA but at all immigrant communities across the United States. For over a decade, these groups have relentlessly targeted immigrants, seeking to undermine their place in this country and destabilize their lives.

Since its inception, DACA has provided a lifeline for hundreds of thousands, allowing them to work, pursue education, and contribute to their communities without the constant fear of deportation. A 2021 report found that DACA recipients contribute an estimated $42 billion to the annual GDP, with 94% either employed or enrolled in school. However, while DACA has been a critical safeguard, it was never meant to be a permanent solution. It was intended as a stepping stone toward broader, more comprehensive immigration reform. These latest attacks can feel disheartening, as if we are moving backward instead of forward.

Yet, even as we face this uncertainty, we must remember that we are not alone. Immigrant communities have always shown incredible resilience and strength. Regardless of the outcome of this court hearing, we will continue to stand together, protect one another, and push for the lasting change we need. Our fight is far from over, and no matter what happens, we have each other’s backs.

As we await the 5th Circuit Court’s decision, it is critical for DACA recipients to stay informed and proactive. Here’s what you can do in the meantime:

1. File Your DACA Renewals: If your DACA status is set to expire within the next six months, it is essential to submit your renewal application as early as possible. Delays in processing are common, so taking action now can help protect your status.
2. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest news on DACA and consult trusted legal services to understand how any changes may affect you.
3. Seek Legal Assistance: If possible, speak with an immigration attorney or attend a legal clinic to explore other forms of relief that might be available to you. It’s important to know all your options in case the court’s decision impacts DACA.
4. Prepare Your Documents: Make sure that all your important documents, such as ID and/or driver’s license, are up to date to avoid disruptions in employment or other services.
5. Engage in Community: Connect with local immigrant rights groups to access resources, information, and support during this uncertain time. Staying connected to your community can help you navigate the challenges ahead.
